100 Days of Something or Other

This series is my occasional countdown to Anime Weekend Atlanta. I’ve done it two or three times with varying levels of success, and I’m embarking on the quest to mark 100 days with 100 posts about anime, manga, animation, comics, film, and conventions. We’ll see what happens.

100 Days of Anime 2026: Day 001/100

OP of the Day: “ODDTAXI” by Skirt and PUNPEE from Odd Taxi (2021)

Currently Watching: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

I am behind on this blog and a lot of other things beside. I’d intended to spend July prepping for this moment because the day job is coming to taketh so that later on it can giveth. Alas, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to write this time around.

If you’re new here (almost certainly), this blog got its proper start when I started making daily posts counting down the days to Anime Weekend Atlanta. I wanted to be writing again, AWA had become the center point of my year, and I wasn’t watching anime or reading manga as much as I would have liked.

So 100 Days of Anime came to be. I think that was nine years ago. There was stuff here before. There has been stuff here since, and this stuff will be here again.

This year, though, I don’t quite know what I’m going to write. I am once again not writing enough for my pleasure, but I am also disappointed any time I write something where I really feel the only purpose was to say “I posted today!” Cheap and no thrills or frills there.

I also haven’t watched as much anime or read as much manga as I would have liked, and I think that might be the theme. But I don’t like reviews over much. Analysis is fun sometimes, but I think the tone is going to be more “personal essay with an anime framework.”

A thing I’ve been putting off is how the convention and convention centers and Atlanta and anime and the Braves and Ted Turner and bison all tumbled into my life and became an anchor in my year. I think we’ll try to get there in bits and pieces.

(An aside: I learned this year that the [adult swim] Saturday night anime block — not Toonami, between the two runs of Toonami — that I’d been remembering for years never actually existed. All the shows I remembered did air in the block at some point and usually at the times I remembered, but they were never all together and some of them didn’t air for years after I thought they did. I want to talk about that, too.)

A long time ago, when I was still in college, my friends and I (half-graduated, half-undergraduate) began an annual pilgrimage to Atlanta. Back then, we traveled up in the last burning days of summer when the world was green-yellow and hot, and we sheltered for four days in a bubble of friendship and of the hobbies we loved, and then when we left that bubble to come home, autumn was in the world. That’s the start of it.

Until next time.
