In this series, I’ll be working my way through Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea works and analyzing her prose chapter by chapter. Spoilers follow.
On the High Marsh
Length: 22 pages
Setting: Semel
This is effectively a bit of wizardly slice of life fiction. We have a wicked mage on the path toward redemption. Irioth is, like Aspen and Cob and others, a reflection of Ged, a path that Ged’s story could have taken were his circumstances only a little different.
It’s hard not to love Irioth for his gentleness with animals, even after we learn his history at Roke.
There’s not much here I’m looking to explore, so I’ll keep this short and move on to our next tale.
Until next time.
