In this series, I’ll be working my way through Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea works and analyzing her prose chapter by chapter. Spoilers follow.
Chapter 13: The Stone of Pain
Length: 9 pages, 50 paragraphs
Setting: Selidor and Back Again
Characters introduced: Kalessin
I think I would have been wiser to combine this with the last chapter. Though not labeled as such, this is essentially an epilogue.
We get unusually close to a “happily ever after,” but Le Guin seemed uncertain about where she wanted to leave Ged at the end of the tale. It took her 18 years to pick it up again.
I don’t have much to say on the ending. I do plan to pick up with Tehanu tomorrow.
Until next time.
