In this series, I’ll be working my way through Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea works and analyzing her prose chapter by chapter. Spoilers follow.
Chapter 5: Sea Dreams
Length: 8 pages, 55 paragraphs
Setting: At sea
Characters introduced: None
This chapter is a deep breath before we dive further in. I think the first part of this chapter with Arren swimming alongside the flying fish and Sparrowhawk mentioning his understanding with the sharks of the South Reach is probably the most whimsical bit of Earthsea so far.
Arren dreams of a ruined Roke, and Ged tells us about Cob. Spoilers: Cob is the villain of the piece.
It’s a simple chapter, a much needed bit of light and thoughtfulness after the horrors of Hort Town and the slavers.
Until next time.
