Month of the Dragon: Iconic Bronze Dragons

In addition to the 10 facts about each type of dragon, I’m crafting three unique draconic NPCs for each type. Each NPC will have a bit of personality and history, a lair description, a unique ability, and a hoard.

Admiral Strond
Young Bronze Dragon

  • Age: 70 years
  • Bio: Strond’s parents lived alongside a human kingdom beset by dangers on all sides. Shortly after he left home to create his own lair, his parents were murdered by enemies from within the kingdom. Strond and his storm giant godmother returned to put an end to the coup that took his parents’ lives before it could undo centuries of work. Now, he serves as one of the kingdom’s admirals.
  • Alternative Characterization: Though quite old compared to humans, there is still an air of youthful inexperience around Strond, and he is easily influenced and hot-tempered. Some distrust his godmother’s intentions, as well.
  • Lair: Strond lives beneath the human capital in a cave complex decorated with broken ships and accessed under the harbor.
  • Unique Ability: Wind Javelin. Strond coalesces wind into a javelin-like form and hurls it at a creature he can see within 300 feet of him. The javelin is considered a magic weapon and deals 10 (3d6) piercing damage to the target, striking unerringly. The javelin disappears after it hits.
  • Hoard: A ring of water elemental summoning, approximately 4,000 gp in coins, and an assortment of gems with a total value of 1,500 gp.

Lyari Corym
Adult Bronze Dragon

  • Age: 300 years
  • Bio: Two centuries ago, Lyari Corym began her rite of passage to adulthood among the bronze dragons, but as she traveled the world bound in the form of a sea elf adventurer, she was cursed and lost her memory. While seeking the truth of her past, she met and fell in love with another sea elf. Though she has regained her memories and the power to transform, Lyari remains with her wife, fiercely protecting the sea elf city that took her in and the children she has adopted.
  • Alternative Characterization: Lyari is eager to influence her adopted home, and her experiences in the world have left her jaded, pushing the city ever toward isolation.
  • Favored Form: Lyari lives as a sea elf woman, muscle-bound and carrying the scars of a curse in the form of faded white runes around her neck.
  • Lair: Lyari lives in a simple cottage, returning to the lair she built as a young dragon only a few times a year. Her original lair, a seaside cave beneath a crumbling lighthouse, would take months to reach on foot.
  • Unique Ability: As a sea elf, Lyari has the statistics of a warlord (found in Volo’s Guide to Monsters) but can also use her breath weapon.
  • Hoard: A Vorpal sword, 200,000 gp in coins, and a collection of gems and jewelry with a total value of 10,000 gp.

Wolaro
Ancient Bronze Dragon

  • Age: Unknown
  • Bio: Wolaro lives with whales and has done so for years beyond counting. Those dragons old enough to warrant his attention say that the dragon has lost his appetite for war after too much loss and simply seeks to protect the majestic creatures he travels with.
  • Alternative Characterization: Wolaro sees danger to his pod, even when no threat is intended, and he has attacked innocent ships unprovoked.
  • Favored Form: Wolaro spends most of his time in the form of a gargantuan whale, swimming with the pod he has protected for millennia. On the rare occasion that he transforms into a humanoid, he takes on the appearance of a wizened and unusually tall triton.
  • Lair: Wolaro keeps a small lair in a cave on a rocky isle in the center of his pod’s migratory route.
  • Unique Ability: Innate Spellcasting. Wolaro’s spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 20). Wolaro can innately cast dominate beast three times per day.
  • Hoard: A whalebone spear (has the same function as a holy avenger), a set of +3 plate armor, an iron flask containing a marid,, 322,000 gp in coins,, and a collection of gems with a total value of 25,000 gp.
