Month of the Dragon: Iconic White Dragons

In addition to the 10 facts about each type of dragon, I’m crafting three unique draconic NPCs for each type. Each NPC will have a bit of personality and history, a lair description, a unique ability, and a hoard.

Scale-Wolf
Young White Dragon

  • Age: 20 years
  • Bio: Still quite young, Scale-Wolf has been raised by a pack of ice wolves and knows next to nothing about other dragons. He still lives with and hunts with his pack and has become a menace to northern villages. Frost giants have recently begun to hunt this particular pack of wolves for their pelts and the hide of the young dragon.
  • Alternative Characterization: Scale-Wolf, raised apart from his white dragon kin, has no particular fear or hatred for other creatures. Though he’ll kill an obvious meal, he’s also prepared to work with anyone strong enough to help him hunt.
  • Lair: Scale-Wolf lives with his pack, sleeping in the crook of a stony hill in an evergreen wood.
  • Unique Ability: Pack Tactics. Scale-Wolf has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of Scale-Wolf’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.
  • Hoard: A spear fletched like an arrow (a +2 spear), a giant’s belt pouch containing approximately 4,000 gp in coins, and an assortment of furs with a total value of 1,500 gp.

Blue-Eyed Hargano
Adult White Dragon

  • Age: 900 years
  • Bio: The archmage that experimented on Vasata, was inspired to conduct his experiments by witnessing the power of Hargano. Hargano lives and hunts alone, but northern legends tell of three such dragons hatched on an altar dedicated to an uncertain god. The identity of the god changes from one village to the next, but his unique powers are believed to be a blessing from this god. Kobolds in the region aspire to serve the white dragon, but he has, so far, devoured all their messengers. The kobolds are curious about the legends of his origin.
  • Alternative Characterization: Though a solitary creature, some folktales suggest Hargano has allowed warriors to ride on his back in times of crisis.
  • Lair: Hargano lives in a long-abandoned frost giant longhouse.
  • Unique Ability: Arcane Burst (Recharge 6) Hargano unleashes a beam of arcane energy in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Each time Hargano uses this ability, she must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) radiant damage on a failed save but none at all on a successful one.
  • Hoard: A holy avenger, 200,000 gp in coins, and a collection of gems and jewelry with a total value of 10,000 gp.

Queen of the Northern Seas
Ancient White Dragon

  • Age: Unknown
  • Bio: The Queen spent several centuries frozen within a glacier, healing from a fearsome battle with Eldfjall, her red dragon junior. When she awoke, an ice devil had transformed her lair into a den for reavers. The Queen expelled the ice devil, murdering most of his crew, and now the diabolic pirate travels the north in disguise, seeking adventurers who will help him slay the dragon.
  • Alternative Characterization: The Queen is obsessed with honor. She will not take an enemy by surprise, and she will only fight alone.
  • Lair: The Queen’s glacier has been shaped into a fortress of ice and splintered ships. The spirits of dead pirates now cower in the outer halls, and various arctic beasts have begun to sneak into the areas too small for the Queen’s use.
  • Unique Ability: Regeneration. The Queen regains 40 hit points at the start of her turn. If she takes fire damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of her next turn.
  • Hoard: A horn of Valhalla (iron), a luck blade, a ring of water elemental command, a partial deck of many things, 322,000 gp in coins, a black-hulled longship with a dragon skull masthead (worth 10,000 gp), and a collection of gems with a total value of 15,000 gp.
